As I sat reading this mornings Bible scripture, I had a few thoughts... I wonder why the book of Titus is called the book of Titus. I mean, sure, the apostle Paul was writing to his close friend and protégé, Titus...but Titus was leading a church on the island of Crete. Why wasnt this book of the Bible called Crete, or letters to the Cretians? It wasnt. It was named after Titus. Maybe Im too sleep deprived or reading too much into it, but it made me stop and think. Then, I started thinking about the Bible. Sixty six books in all, and there are some very famous verses...John 3:16 comes to mind: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Yes, I think most of us know that verse. Another one is Philippians 4:13: I can do everything through him who gives me strength. You probably heard of that one, too. But what about Titus 2:11-14? Do you know that one? I didnt. It reads: For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say No to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who have himself to us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. Those are some very powerful and comforting words, my friends! It tells us that we have all seen Gods grace. The passage helps us know how to live, to not follow sin and the bright lights and idols of this world, and how to properly live right now as we await for Jesus to return. And I as read further ahead in the book of Titus, I came across Titus 3:3-7, which reads: At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. Wow! Brothers and sisters, we all have our favorite verses. Some of them may be the most well known verses in the Bible. But make sure you read through the Bible. You will find, as I did this morning, that there are so many great verses throughout Gods word. Make sure you take the time to read the Bible...God has given us advice, strength, faith, grace, love, and forgiveness to help us live our lives...and sometimes, in order to find it, you just need to pick up the Bible and start reading. Amen. ~John Lloyd~
