As I think of everything that has happened in my life I know that people are sent to us without knowing why, with this said I have a story of an angel that was sent to me. While in nursing school I meet a the most wonderful patient anyone could ask to take care of. Other nurses on the floor said that this patient was nothing but problems and was a cranky old woman. What they didnt realize it she had a story to tell and needed someone to listen. That someone was me. As my time passed on the floor and we were done with our 3 day rotation. My cranky patient asked to speak with my instructor, as my heart raced and sank to my stomach, she spoke so very kindly and highly of me. She told my instructor that she would take me over anyone else in the hospital including the staff, she stated Hilary is the absolute best ever and no one will fill her shoes with taking care of me. I was truly amazed that I made a difference in her life. A few weeks had passed and I got a phone call from her son (he knew my mom). He had asked if I would be willing to come and take care of his mom who was dying of brain cancer. I said well Im not sure I have enough experience to take this on. He said that his mother couldnt imagine anyone else to take care of her. As the weeks passed I established a wonderful relationship with my cranky patient who truly was the most kind and generous person I have ever had the pleasure to know and of course her family. I helped clean her up for the last time whispered into her ear that I loved her and will always treasure knowing this kind gentle person. Her family insisted that I go to the funeral which I did. I enjoyed hearing stories of this wonderful woman who I grew to love so quickly. I was getting ready to leave and pulled aside her daughter and son, I told them that I cannot thank them enough for giving me the pleasure of taking care of their mother. In return this wonderfully kind family paid for me to take my state boards for my nursing license. On that day when I took those boards I knew I had my angel on side watching over me. I prayed to her and I knew she heard my prayers. Now I am an RN with the knowledge of knowing one person does make a difference. God gives us angels some we already have and some pick us. God bless all of our angels in heaven. Please know we always think of you.
