As I was #singing at a gig last night, I took a deep breath & inhaled massive amounts of #smoke from the two men sitting directly below me and immediately felt constricted. I also notice a significant difference in how I feel the next day after playing a smokey place versus a non-smokey place. While we all know second-hand smoke is bad for us, I made the mistake of refreshing my mind on the research…and seemed to have blocked out how unbelievably toxic it really is. If you smoke thats your prerogative, but PLEASE have respect for those of us that dont and are trying to preserve our health & life: A study from the August 2004 British Medical Journal reported that a cigarette releases 10 times the amount of air pollution as a diesel engine. In 1993, the Environmental Protection Agency categorized secondhand smoke in Group A -- the most severe form of carcinogen -- along with arsenic, mustard gas, and asbestos. You may be surprised about the contents of #secondhand smoke. From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, here is a list of some chemicals in secondhand smoke and the other places you can find them: Carbon monoxide (also found in car exhaust) Arsenic (rat poison) Ammonia (window cleaner) Acetone (nail polish remover) Hydrogen cyanide (gas chamber poison) Napthalene (mothballs) Sulphur compounds (match tips) Formaldehyde (embalming fluid) Butane (lighter fluid) The various health problems that can be caused by secondhand smoke: Heart Disease Cancer - Lung Cancer, Nasal Sinus Cancer Asthma or other Respiratory Illness Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
