As I was sitting on the patio this morning, I was thinking about the book I just finished. An Assault n Reason by Al Gore. While I don’t agree with every political thing he discussed, I was taken by some of his concerns. We as a society are living in a fearful time. Caught up in our concern for our own safety we have given away many of the rights we had in an earlier time. As we are walked down the path holding the hand of our protector, we are walking into a cell of our own making. While we are safe, we are no longer really free. We are fed daily words designed to kindle our fear and allow those whom we have voted into office to protect us by telling us that if we allow them to do some action, that we will once again be safe. What they gain is political power and what we lose is our voice. Is that what we really want? Is the absolute trust in someone else to protect us where we want to go? I don’t want to live locked away in my split level home in the Valley, or my row house in Baltimore, or on my ranch in Texas, or my little cabin in Montana. I want to be able to open the door, walk out into the sunlight and feel that while I am protected, I also am protecting myself, by beating back the fear and not allowing it to be that prison of my own making. I will vote responsibly, ask my representatives to represent me and all of the others in our society fairly and consistently, and to work in all of our best interests. I will not be afraid.
