As I wrote on Wednesday, these were not the deeds of legitimate political actors or freedom fighters. The perpatrators are terrorists, and despite the scale, no less so than those who took down the twin towers, those who shoot young girls in the face for going to school in Afghanistan, or those who murder women for marrying people they love in India. The Palestinian people as a whole certainly have legitimate grievances with several of the Israeli governments that have been in power over the years, but none of them can ever justify the abduction and murder of teenagers. I dont care where they were headed or attended school. There is no moral equivalence, and absolutely, positively, no way that any member of civil society can reasonably justify such actions. If you feel tempted to do so, take a very close look in the mirror. I honestly and truly believe the pursuit of social justice is essential to humanity, and its a cornerstone of Jewish culture and tradition. Those of you who would even consider excusing these actions as an understandable response to a lack thereof, however, need to recognize that doing so means no moral compass remains within your worldview. And without one, on what foundation can your social justice aims possibly rest upon?
