As Im standing in line at the BX, this young kid in front of me - TopicsExpress

As Im standing in line at the BX, this young kid in front of me was buying a bunch of stuff, he was new here. He went and grabbed a roll of chew (maintainer). He then asked the cashier the price because he only had so much cash on his card. He was over so he told the cashier to put the American flag back. Im guessing he was looking to fly it. He chose his dip over the flag. At the same time I know how bad he wants that nicotine, but he wants that flag. The first thought I had was I hate not being able to get all the stuff I want. Out of impulse I told the cashier to give me the flag along with my AAA batteries. I finally caught up to the kid and handed him the flag and said Here, pay it forward. He said Wow thanks man. I really hope I see him on the flight line when Im playing the role of QA and see how the interaction plays out. I can see both ways of how he chose his pleasure over the American symbol and how he wanted both. Ive noticed that I do little things like this more often and this specific situation really made me realize that the fact that I know I can buy something thats $90 or $400 with no problem but dont because I just dont want to, yet I bought that flag without hesitation and never even looked at how much it cost (I just reached in my pocket and realized I threw the receipt away). He may not pay it forward and I might not get good karma for it, then again, maybe I will. Either way, it doesnt stop me from who I am out of kindness and wont stop me from continuing to do such acts. Which is funny because I enjoy acting like a kid/smart ass some of the time. But its only because I know it puts smiles on peoples faces. Most importantly, making Lena and the kids smile. Nothing makes me happier than seeing lena smile and calling me a dork. Im not saying I deserve the comeback, but what ever comes at me, good or bad, Ill take it in stride. At least I hope that I will. This happened a few weeks ago, he flew his flag. Maintainers always gotta look out for one another, fighter or heavy. -Biscuit
