As Malawians are anxiously waiting for a report on the cause of the fire that gutted Escom building in Blantyre, the government has announced that the structure will be demolished and build new one at the same site. The move, according to Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola, is to avoid further damage if it is rehabilitated in its current status. This comes as the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) has taken over the charge of overseeing the report on the fire. Members of the public have been piling pressure on the authorities to release the report, amid speculation that the building was deliberately destroyed to conceal evidence on the parastatal’s lavish spending of public funds. Matola told Capital FM that the building had also outlived its life span.
