As Obama considers raising the minimum wage, it’s ironic that the same people who regularly support tariffs on imported goods because it will raise their prices, thus discouraging purchase by consumers and (supposedly) protecting American jobs, turn right around and claim that raising the legal minimum wage of unskilled workers (mostly young people) won’t discourage their hiring by businesses and decrease their employment. Apparently, the law of supply-and-demand is selective about the goods and services to which it applies. If I were cynical, I might suspect there’s another agenda at work.
