As-Salaam Alaikum, Allah mentions in the Qur’an, O Believers! Be dutifully mindful of Allah and pursue the means that lead unto Him; strenuously exert yourselves for His sake in order to be successful. (5:35) In this verse, we are reminded that the essence of God-consciousness lies in leaving off harmful and forbidden things, even though the soul may have a deep craving for them. The essence of pursuing the means to Allah lies in doing those things He has commanded, even though the soul may find those things difficult and undesirable. Hence, we are commanded to exert ourselves strenuously, because the path the believer walks in this world is a difficult one and one has to work arduously to remain on it.
