As Salaam Alaikum, Increasingly we see a lack of moral restraint in this society. The system of taboos and prohibitions that formerly served to check people’s actions has been systematically eroded. What is there to check people? In his book, “The Death of Satan”, Andrew Delbanco makes the point that people no longer fear God, nor Satan. This situation leads to the loss of a common morality that is necessary for constructive social life. In the absence of a unifying moral code, human life degenerates into a jungle-like condition qualified by an ethos of “a war of all against all.” The weak, downtrodden, oppressed, and marginalized are left to suffer according to the whims of the rich and powerful. In the resulting atmosphere it becomes easy to lie, steal, cheat and kill. All of these are major national crises contemporarily. To begin to address these issues effectively, we have to work for a return of God-consciousness in our society, coupled with a healthy portion of fear and self-restraint. Returning to the path of decency and moral rectitude is always possible. However, it will never occur without belief in God. God mentions in the Qur’an, “Corruption has appeared on the land and sea because of what the hands of humans have wrought. This is in order that He (God) gives them a taste of what they have brought about, in order that they return.” (30:41)
