As Salaamu Alaykum,Below is the Hadith for the week. As you may know, we have just entered the month of Muharram, which marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year (Hijr calendar). The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that the month of Muharram is one of the four sacred months in the year [Sahih al- Bukhari, 2958]. The day of Ashura falls on the 10th of this sacred month of Muharram (14th November), Ashura is a righteous day when Allah (SWT) saved the children of Israel and drowned Pharoah and his people, so Prophet Moses (Musah - AS) fasted on this day as thanksgiving to Allah (Sahih al- Bukhari, 1865]. v The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: For fasting the day of Ashura, I hope that Allaah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before. [Sahih Muslim, 1976] v The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: The best of fasting after Ramadan is fasting Allaah’s month of Muharram.’ [narrated by Abu Hurairah in Sahih Muslim, 1982]. However, since the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) never fasted any whole month apart from Ramadan, this hadith is probably meant to encourage increasing one’s fasting during Muharram, without meaning that one should fast for the entire month. Ibn Abbas (RA) said: When the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) fasted on Ashura and commanded the Muslims to fast as well, they said, O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.’ The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) then said, If I live to see the next year, insha Allah, we will fast on the 9th day too.’ But it so happened that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) passed away before the next year came. [Sahih Muslim, 1916]. Al-Shaafai and his companions, Ahmad, Ishaaq and others said: It is Mustahabb (encouraged) to fast on both the 9th and 10th days of Muharram, because the Prophet (SAW) fasted on the 10th, and intended to fast on the 9th of Muharram. On this basis it may be said that there are varying degrees of fasting Ashura, the least of which is to fast only on the 10th and the best of which is to fast the 9th as well. This year the 9th and 10th of Muharram will fall on 13th and 14th of November, insha Allah. Please endeavour to fast, for the more one fasts in Muharram, the better it is. We ask Allaah to make us followers of the Sunnah of His Noble Prophet (SAW), to make us live in Islam and die in a state of faith. May He help us to do that which He loves and which pleases Him. We ask Him to help us to remember Him and be thankful to Him, to worship Him properly and to accept our good deeds. May He make us of those who are pious and fear Him. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and all his family and companions.
