As a UK expat from Scotland now living in Dubai, I get asked a lot about my views on the upcoming Scottish Independence Referendum. I even got asked for my opinion by the Al Arabiya news the other day but I declined! For my Facebook friends however, here is what shall definitely be my first and last ever post on the subject. I will leave the newsfeed flooding to some enthusiastic others, we know who they are!! Okay... so personally I have found the scare tactics used by Better Together and some parts of the media, in particular the shameful BBC to be utterly appalling. (What has happened to the BBC by the way? Such a vile institution, and now they dont even bother with trying to hide the fact anymore!) Its so patronising to claim that Scotland would struggle going it alone. I read some of these statistics earlier this week, and so I double checked them just to make sure they were accurate... Scotland has only 8.3% of the UK population, but it is 32% of the UKs land mass. Scotland has 90% of the UKs fresh water resources. Scotland provides 52% of the UKs natural gas resources. Scotland has 96% of the UKs oil resources. Scotland has 46% of the UKs forest area. Scotland provides 40% of the UKs wind, wave and solar energy production. Scotland provides 60% of the UKs fish landing. Scotland provides 20% of the UKs potatoes. Scotland provides 15% of the UKs cereal crop. Scotland provides 85% of the UKs hydroelectric energy resources. I realise this is only part of the full picture, but it does give a really interesting insight to some vital aspects. Its not an easy decision though, as personally Ive always liked the UK as a union. I was actually born in England too. The vote however, is not in any way about tribal nationalism, and its important that everyone realises that. Its whether or not one feels that Scotland would be better governed from Edinburgh rather than Westminster. Therefore, if I could vote, it would be a resounding YES for Scottish Independence. My main reason for that is due to my personal loathing of the vile and corrupt Westminster political establishment. I just think that anyone, from anywhere in the UK working classes who has an opportunity to free themselves from their control most definitely should. So Scotland, please do yourselves a favour and vote YES. So there, thats how I feel about it. I realise that some people will disagree with me and thats fine, were all still friends! According to the most recent poll around 51% of you do actually disagree, but hey everyone is entitled to their opinion and this is just my own. Good luck Scotland whatever the result, and please try not to all fall out with each other over it!
