As a follow-up to the thread below about literary immortality, entertain (I hope its entertaining) this hypothesis: civilization--literate civilization--is going to continue over the next couple of thousand years. Meanwhile, Mephistopheles comes to you with a bargain: you can be enormously famous during your lifetime and read by millions; but you will be forgotten soon after your death. Or you can be utterly neglected during your lifetime and then, after your death. gradually come to be known as a great writer, one who will continue to be read so long as men can breathe or eyes can see. Which do you choose? Be honest.
