As a former firefighter who worked on the critical stress - TopicsExpress

As a former firefighter who worked on the critical stress management team, I have been exposed to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and also Vicarious Trauma. It is important that people in Calgary be aware of these symptoms and be willing to deal with them. This is a critical stage that everyone who has been directly affect by the flooding, the volunteers and those who hear or read the stories be aware of. Even if you are not going into the flood zone you may be affected by the aftermath of the flood. Do an honest self assessment and if you are feeling off, or reacting excessively to circumstances in your daily life, find someone to talk with. A defusing is all you may need right now, or possibly a debriefing (using the Mitch model) before seeking professional help. info-trauma.org/flash/media-e/mitchellCriticalIncidentStressDebriefing.pdf A defusing is an informal honest discussion with your peers share what is going on, be open and sharing and listening to black humor and withhold judgement. A debriefing is more formal. It involved a 7 step process and can help to reduce the long term impact of the traumatic situation, assist in recovery process of those affected by a disturbing event and identify who may benefit from additional support or professional care.
