As a martial arts instructor its inevitable that Im going to deal - TopicsExpress

As a martial arts instructor its inevitable that Im going to deal with a lot of kids that are bullied. Since most of these kids go to the same schools, its also inevitable that (If I ask the names of the bullies, and I do) Im going to get the same names over and over again as frequent offenders. There is currently this one school bully who I have helped four boys (and their parents) to deal with over the course of two years and still keeps being brought to my attention. Most recently it was suggested by a third party that by advising all of these kiddos on how to deal with him (Using the system I might add) Im somehow harassing him. Thats actually my spin, heres (roughly) the way she put it: You cant keep telling all of these kids around him to report him for every minor offense, and to socially isolate him without leaving yourself open to lawsuit. I cant speak to the legal end, but I will say that the bully-boy has soften up over the past two years. He used to do the hardcore things like theft and making direct threats of bodily harm against his classmates. On this latest outing it was mostly the softer stuff like name-calling! So there has been some improvement. So I thought about it and somewhere in all of this nonsense there must be something philosophical for us to discuss. Heres what I came up with: Is teaching multiple boys how to deal with the same bully, an equivalent to harassment? Does the movement from hard core bullying activities to the softer stuff suggest an improvement in a bullys behavior? What do you think is the cause of bullying in the first place?
