As a medical student, the shortage of primary care physicians is a routine talking point in the classroom and in casual conversation. Specialties are more attractive to some graduates and from a financial standpoint, its easy to understand why this is the case. Latest estimates indicate that more than 25% of newly minted MDs will enter residency with debts totaling $250,000+. To be honest, at 24 years old, I cannot even fathom such burden. The ideas presented in this recent article in the Post continue to resonate in my mind. The conversation about reimbursements and the disproportionate demographic of specialists to PCPs is an important one, but from a students perspective, the deeper issue is the situation we face when it comes time to choose our field. Its not only about money, but those who criticize students willing to admit that the ability to repay debts factors into the decision are probably unaware of just how high the cost of medical education has climbed. Unfortunately, its not just the students that will pay a price. Enjoy. GWR washingtonpost/blogs/on-leadership/wp/2014/06/09/the-outrageous-cost-of-working-in-medicine/
