As a painter, Rohlfs had his roots in the German academic - TopicsExpress

As a painter, Rohlfs had his roots in the German academic tradition of the 19th century, but he slowly broke with this tradition in a long and lonely struggle and finally emerged as a significant innovator, independent of his past. He was both a revolutionist and an evolutionist. He could be called a revolutionist because at times his style changed rather abruptly, and an evolutionist because his artistic growth was constant and never ceased to expand throughout his very long life; a life which lasted eighty-nine years. -Keiler, Manfred L., Christian Rohlfs, Pioneer of German Expressionism, College Art Journal Vol. 18, No. 3, Spring, 1959, p.200 Christian Rohlfs Autumn Evening on the Ilm 1888 oil on cardboard 33 x 48.3 cm Kunstsammlungen zu Weimar, Germany
