As a teacher, I am a little shocked by the Denton ISDs decision - TopicsExpress

As a teacher, I am a little shocked by the Denton ISDs decision about student expectations. I for one have ALWAYS offered a retesting component to my grading. Any student who is not successful on a test has always had the opportunity to retest. I require a tutorial before the retest and they take the same test, but only receive a 70. But that way, they dont fail, they learn and they see they are in an environment that cares, but has an expectation. What people need to realize is that homework is never an I gotcha....Its one tool in the tool box for practicing a new concept or skill. Its imperative in foreign language courses. But if they dont do it, they dont learn. It has a purpose. Outside of the learning objective though, it teaches them the real world skill of due dates and personal responsibility. Thats a biggie to me. We are not preparing them for the real world if we dont expect them to be to class on time or not turning in something when it is due. Thats my take on it....thats a very poor decision for them to make for a school district. I would not be happy with that and would be looking for somewhere else to teach that maintains a more real world focus. Have a wonderful and productive day. Sr.
