As a trainee producer, I started the show for TV2 in 1976. Id been producing Andy Shaws afternoon kids show Hey Hey Its Andy, and record companies used to give us promo film clips to play. (Andrew now a big wig at TVNZ.) We played the pop ones; Abba, Bay City Rollers etc, but I had about 50 I couldnt play ( tho a fellow director filled in for me with Andy one week while I was on leave and played a X rated 6 minute clip of THE TUBES without previewing it, wrong! He later joined Sky Sports!) So in September 1976, I asked our TV2 Head Of Programs, Kevin Cmon Show Moore if I could have a late nite spot weekly, no budget so no host, I said it will kinda be like radio, but with pictures. Kevin was a visionary and oked it. Peter McLisky did the original animated titles, a cassette tumbling thru the sky to the middle section of Edgar Winters Frankenstein. We did 13 eps in 1976 thru to Xmas and the 1st ever Keeping It Kiwi special... Lea Maalfrid, Red Hot Peppers, Rays Invaders, Hello Sailor, Dragon etc. I had 13 clips to use. Then in 1977, we added Doctor good evening citizens Rock, (the inimitable Barry Jenkin) and the rest is history. Production moved to Avalon in 1980, Barry was Auckland-based, but Karen did a great job.... sad its not still on air a la Jools Hollands show. Talk to TVNZ! :-)
