As a world, we have been previously able to place an un-manned spacecraft in the path of a passing comets tail. We collected some comet tail dust and got some inter galactic target practice. Today, as a race, we put a satellite in orbit around a comet. It took us ten years to get there...good aim! In a few days, we will land a smaller craft on the comets surface. This points to two very big things for our future. One, it proves we can turn a comet away from earth thats on a Dinosaur killing course with us...if we detect it soon enough. If we place a small solar or nuclear powered engine on the comet, we can slowly adjust its course away from hitting earth. Very nice indeed. But we can also guild them to the moon, where our various processing bases on the dark side can keep the comet a few miles above the moons surface, and it can be processed for rare and valuable minerals...including oxygen, water and rocket fuel.
