As a young preacher I thought (was led to believe?) that revivals were the result of otherwise ordinary men preaching extraordinary sermons and thereby dozens/hundreds/thousands were brought to repentance. What I have learned by the study of history (and my personal pursuit of the subject) is that revivals sprang from ordinary sermons delivered by otherwise ordinary men who were given to God in extraordinary ways. It is the main task of the preacher, therefore, not to try to create the perfect sermon but to strive to give himself absolutely to God.
