As an African American male, I have felt the sting of aggressive policing on more than one occasion. Whats going on in Ferguson MO, is not difficult to relate to for myself and others who look like me. It is hard as an educated law abiding citizen to be spoken to or handled disrespectfully by those who are suppose to protect and serve. As with other professions the level of competence varies within our Policy departments. There are not many things scarier than a person with authority, armed with a weapon and a bad attitude.Having said all of that, the job that we ask these men and women to do is some of the most dangerous work that exist. When we are in danger, need help or see a situation of which we are not equipped to handle, how many of us would NOT want a Policy officer there by our side. Just the nature of the Job deserves respect because its not for everyone. Its a special Job that needs special people. And in a society where we provide adulation and vast sums of money to people who play a game, sing a song or spend their lives pretending, instead of those who devote their lives to educating or protecting us, perhaps Ferguson MO and other towns like it are crosses we all have to bear
