As an American Studies major in college, I concentrated in History and Society and specialized in Race and Ethnicity. But I cant tell you all how much I am learning about race relations in America through Urban Cusp on a daily basis. This was deep. Just posted on our page: On October 30th, we posted a photo sent to us of two white men in blackface wearing sheriffs clothing sitting atop what appeared to be a vehicle of police property. We were contacted and told the individuals were not members of the Oklahoma police department and that it was not a police vehicle in the photo. We immediately posted updates to the photo to reflect that information. Now, we have been contacted by one of the men in the actual photo. He stated that he knows we have a very powerful page that has a lot of good in the other posts and he regretted the volatile comments the image brought about. We have engaged the individual in dialogue about the seriousness of the photo and why it brought about the response that it did, particularly at a time of national incidents of police brutality and rampant disregard for black life. He has expressed sincere regrets and has asked us to remove the photo as a difficult lesson learned that he will never repeat again. We agreed to take the photo down under the condition that the private apology posted on his page would also lead to a public apology to our community here. Urban Cusp community, this is the statement he asked us to share with you below. In keeping our word, we will be deleting the photo. Hello, I am one of the people in this picture. We are dressed as cops, black cops, as a disguise for Halloween. The truth is, we are not cops and we are not black. The Pittsburgh county sheriffs office or any other law enforcement has no part in this. We put stickers on a golf cart. We bought badges, hand cuffs, and brown make up from the costume section of Walmart. We had a radio playing Bad Boys theme song. The reason I explained that is some people may be offended we dressed as cops, but most are offended because we dressed as black cops. So I wanted to cover both topics. With that being said, we would like to sincerely apologize to anyone we have offended. I am not a racist person and I have no disrespect for law enforcement. In the future I will make better decisions to prove that. Thank you and God bless. Thank you Urban Cusp. It makes me feel good to see people that want to help rather than fuel an already bad situation. I cant take it back but I can be sure not to let it happen again.
