As an anarchist, I abhor all formal institutions including legislation and law enforcement, but I likewise recognize the fact that many people are unable to protect themselves and require external aid, and that there will always be a need for security, protection, prevention, and retrieval services. That being said, I think its quite clear that in the United States, the way were going about trying to fulfill this need is terribly, terribly wrong. As the events in Ferguson, MO clearly show, our system is completely messed up and backwards. As numerous case precedents have shown, police are not actually required to serve and protect American citizens. So what, then, are they for? Judging from the massive amount of abuses Im tracking every single week, the police exist to generate revenue for the State, to protect the interests and property of the wealthy and powerful, to meet the demands of the Prison Industrial Complex, to kill family pets, damage homes (often at the wrong addresses) and to serve as an outlet for violent, frustrated, insecure people (mostly men) of low intelligence and poor coping skills who feel alienated from society and are looking for a place to belong. Oh yeah, sometimes they actually catch criminals. Nothing really illustrates the difference between law enforcement here and elsewhere better than this story out of Iceland. When police had no other option but to shoot someone, they didnt riddle him with bullets, and afterwards they along with the entire community mourned the taking of a sacred human life. Meanwhile, we have cops in Ferguson that call protestors animals and have verbally threatened to kill journalists. Ill post a few more links to show that something is terribly wrong. Im told not all cops are bad, so what are the ostensible good cops doing to change this? I know several people in law enforcement, and I know youre not allowed to comment on things publicly, but I want you to think about this.
