As co-director of the CUNY Black Male Initiative at Hunter College - TopicsExpress

As co-director of the CUNY Black Male Initiative at Hunter College and chair of the advisory board for the all male (primarily Black and Hispanic) Eagle Academy public schools in New York I have to agree with the findings. We have seen over and over that given high expectations and encouragement--including the right to say I dont know our students have risen to the challenge. Indeed at Hunter we have had at least 8 students in the past two years go on to doctoral programs and over the years even more to graduate and professional schools including top tier schools. But we have consistently affirmed their capacity and our program was greatly informed by Dr. Shaun Harpers work. I saw similar outcomes at NYU when working with students of color there and using a success vs. a deficit model. Those students too have done extraordinarily well. These are students who, unlike those who may come from greater privilege, may not have had affirming environments at home and/or school and so are more in need of these kinds of encouraging interventions in their academic lives.
