As far as good old fashioned action films go, they are a dying breed. Films like Die Hard 1, Predator 1, Terminator 1 &2, Robocop 1 etc. may not have the deepest stories but are very re-watchable because they are entertaining, John Wick is one such film which is really up there as a modern quality action film with recent similar films like Drive, The Raid and Dredd (to a lesser extent) but still not on level with Tarantinos Kill Bill Series and Django Unchained. The movie is straightforward and has no pretentiousness about it, if you like the trailer, you will like the movie as well, its more of the same and that is not bad at all. Plot is simple, John Wick is a retired former best hitman of the world, lost his wife to cancer (presumably) and her last gift to him was a cute little puppy, his home gets broken into and his puppy gets killed (but its off screen, dont cry) and Mr. Wick is out for revenge for his puppy who symbolized his last remaining connection to his wife against a powerful Russian Mafia Boss. Yup thats it, rest of the film is filled with beautiful action scenes and John Wick racks up bodies quickly and efficiently making his way through the Mafia hierarchy and hired assassins. One of my favorite sequences was a lengthy 20 minute infiltration of a lavish nightclub by John Wick, he kills people with loud music playing in the background, leaves puddles of blood in private pools and dimly lit areas, blood all over disco ball, literally blood on the dance floor, and it was great eye candy, an absolute visual treat. Quite a solid debut by the director I am going to be on a lookout for more of his works. Keanu Reeves is ever efficient in playing wooden faced ruthless killers and it feels like the film was made for him, I dont think anyone could have pulled this role off as good as him. There is a certain mystery about the film too, assassins seemingly have their own currency and even a common hotel where the Management insists no business is to be conducted but these interesting themes are never explored. Also the film often sacrifices logic and common sense in an effort to look cool but these are small discrepancies in otherwise a great action film which recent action films like Lucy and Expendables series have wet dreams about wanting to be half as good, dont miss it. https://youtube/watch?v=RllJtOw0USI
