As it has become more widely known that members of Congress will receive special treatment under Obamacare, we have seen a lot of discussion and outrage regarding this egregious abuse of governmental authority. While the rest of the country braces for the impact of this unwanted and unnecessary health care mandate, the men and women who helped put it into law have little to worry about. That is because they, in effect, have exempted themselves from some of the key provisions of this glaring overreach of federal authority. As a legislator who represents thousands of folks who also will have to find a way to cope with federally-run health care, I am gravely disappointed that our elected officials in Washington, D.C. have opted to treat themselves differently from the people they represent. I am hopeful the members of the Missouri Congressional delegation, as well as the other members of Congress who are there to do what is best for their constituents, will continue to work together to set things right. As my friend and former colleague, Congressman Jason Smith recently wrote, “The United States is not a nation with one set of rules for families in the fifty states and another set of rules for Washington politicians.” Let’s hope Congressman Smith and his colleagues with common sense can balance the playing field and give the people of this great nation a reason to once again believe that our federal government is there to improve rather than impair our quality of life.
