As it is in classrooms throughout the country, hands-on learning is a vital part of the curriculum at all-male French Broad River Academy. Increasingly, teachers are incorporating a means of learning that imprints lessons in students’ minds by letting them hold, manipulate and alter objects and systems. “Hands-on learning helps students retain and internalize the material,” said Will Yeiser, the academy’s director and co-founder. “It’s better than learning something just to spit it out for a test and forget it. Hands-on learning helps our students accomplish things that go way beyond the classroom.” Incorporating action into the curriculum helps engage a child’s interest in a visceral way, creating an additional pathway to learning. A 2009 study by researchers at Purdue University concluded that hands-on, problem-solving learning may be a more effective way to teach students about technology and engineering than traditional lecture and textbook-based teaching.
