As many of us return to the normal, daily grind this morning, we want to take a moment and share the story of an InterFaith patient. There are so many who just barely fall through the cracks and miss out on healthcare because of it. Let all of us who are fortunate enough to be healthy and receive the care we need be grateful and remember those who do not. *MR is a 63 year old female with a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma, and arthritis which affects many joints. She is retired from her job, but would likely not be able to work because of her chronic pain from arthritis. She lives alone; she has no family; she has few friends. She has difficulty financially due to limited income from social security. She tries to limit additional medical expenses and has decided to forgo screening tests such as a pap smear, mammogram and colonoscopy, hoping she will be okay until she is eligible for Medicare at age 65. * InterFaith Health Clinic has provided the following services to this patient that she would not otherwise have available: o Referral department: Ophthalmology referral for treatment of glaucoma (this can cause blindness if not treated), orthopedic referral for treatment of arthritis and pain o Lab: She received discounted lab services to monitor her medical conditions o Dispensary: She had glaucoma medicine special-ordered. It would cost more than $100/month if she had to pay out of pocket; more money than she can afford. *MR is very appreciative of the care she has received at InterFaith Health Clinic and has expressed the belief that she would not have been able to make it without the assistance provided. Her medical problems are relatively stable and she continues to receive ongoing care.
