As many of you already know, I received a call last Friday that set in motion a new course for my life. It’s not the call I wanted, but it is the call I received. I have officially been diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Luekemia. Since Friday I have had a short hospital stay, had a crash course in new terms, blood draws, a bone biopsy, an EKG, cried rivers of tears and been the subject of many prayers. Tonight I will begin taking pills worth more than their weight in gold and when I take that first pill, I will do so with gratitude. Gratitude that I live in an era of such medical advancement that these pill even exist. In the coming weeks I will continue to be surrounded by knowledgeable doctors who will monitor my blood and oversee that the medicine is doing its’ job and my body is adapting as it should. If this hurdle is passed then come regular blood draws, follow up bone biopsies, maintaining this disease and, most importantly, the rest of my life. This world we live in is a profoundly tragic place, but this is nothing new. Also not new is the daily presence of a Good God. A God who doesn’t desire to see us suffer but instead passes to us a gift that we only need to reach out and receive. The gift of peace that can only be explained and found in Him. Today I live at the table of eucharisteo. Grace. Thanksgiving. Joy. The table that offers so much more.
