As memory is getting cheaper, I think within 5 years most of the small sized and mid sized databases would move to in memory databases. Large DBs also should be moving frequently used data to in memory tables. Unlike Distributed cache , these in-memory databases do not compromise on durability (the D in ACID). In another 10 years perhaps we will very frequently see NUMA separated Memory cluster Nodes where if one Numa node goes down, rest can cope up without data loss.
