As most of you know, Im on a 10 month training plan to prepare for the 2015 Senior Olympics (triathlon) which will take place next July in Minneapolis. Im a proud member of the National Senior Olympics Foundation Board where my mission is to help promote health and fitness for the 50+ crowd. Betcha didnt know that: By the time the 2015 Games take place, over 45% of the USA population will be 50+; An American turns 50 every 7 seconds---12,500 per day; The 55+ age group controls more than 3/4 of USA wealth. We 50+ folks are a powerful group. Regardless how old you are, its imperative that you start to take care of yourself right now. You need to build a strong physical/mental fitness base so that you can stay strong and independent, minimizing any interactions with the medical industry, unless its for prevention. Im not kidding. Start today. And when you do, youll need a good support system. I know. Im living it. Everyone needs support as they push themselves to achieve in any sector in their life. For me, Ive assembled a wonderful A team of family, friends and my beloved German Shepherd (yes, pets DO count!) to help me stay on track in every sector of my life, not just my training. Why do I train? Its always good to have some goals in life to keep you focused on your own self-care. Its so easy to come undone and self-destruct. Recently I added another member to my team. Shoubrey Sos is a trainer at the Equinox Club I belong to. Ive used trainers on and off over the past 30+ years. My decision to engage him involved these factors: He has experience in physical therapy and rehab which is very important to me as I have a healing hamstring injury. Also, as a card carrying member of the 50+ club, I creak when I awaken in the morning, and am less flexible. I want someone to show me the best stretching and strengthening techniques done safely as I strive to optimize my health and fitness; Im open to learning new tools and methods to adapt and adjust to my body as I age. Im planning ahead and trying to be proactive; I want to try brand new ways to have enhance the fun and challenge of staying fit. Girls just wanna have fun, after all. :-) And last but not least, it REALLY HELPS that his last name is SOS. Thats Save Our Self to me and boy does it resonate. So, from here on out, Im trainin with the SOS guy. LOL! SOS and I did a selfie at the club after he guided me through a great workout, complete with stretches, balance work and strength training. See pics below. If you want to try a fitness professional at any time in your life, you have options. Go to ideafit/fitnessconnect and youll find a credentialed professional in your neck of the woods. This is a great resource. Always ask what their certifications are and make absolute certain they ARE certified. If you belong to a health club, one of the YMCA/YWCAs, or a community center, ask one of their professionals to sit down with you and map out a strategy for your overall fitness. You can see this professional once a week, every other week, or once a month to stay on track. This is driven by availability and budget. Join a group class or share the cost of the trainer with one or two others to keep it cost effective. From here on out Ill have more SOS adventures to share. How about YOU? Have you ever ventured out to add a fitness professional to your A team?
