As of today, we are officially 11 days out from the premiere of the “Meet the Mormons” film, and there’s a bit of a marketing push happening. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland is featured in a new promotional spot for the film, where he articulates how “Meet the Mormons” came about, and makes some clarifications about the movie (it sounds like there’s been some confusion). Among some of the clarifications: This is a real movie in real movie theaters, where people can purchase tickets. Second, it is church produced and First Presidency commissioned. Third, it is an “entertaining, uplifting and inspiring movie” not meant as a proselytizing effort, but as informative. According to Elder Holland, “missionaries will not be in or near theaters.” Fourth, the church is not making any money on the film – net proceeds will go to the American Red Cross. “As with any theatrical film, our success will depend on box office performance during the opening weekend. How long the film will be available in theaters will be dependent upon that.” He also suggests that there are three steps that local units can take: First, one can request the film, whether online or going to a theater and requesting a “group buyout.” Second, he suggests people can share the content online. Third, experience it by attending on opening weekend. I have two thoughts when seeing this video – First, I’m surprised there’s this much confusion regarding this film among Mormons. Second…who exactly is this movie marketed towards? Because while one side seems to be saying it’s for non-Mormons to learn about the LDS Faith, the other side seems to be making a big push on getting the Mormons to go see it? https://youtube/watch?v=r_5z1K2Ryx0&sns=tw
