As part of my graduate work to get a Ph.D. as a composer, I had to take a large number of theory courses and a large number of musicology courses. I would have preferred more time spent on orchestration, chromatic harmony, score reading, 20th-century ear training, and counterpoint, but whatever. I would now like to propose that anyone getting a Ph.D. in music theory or musicology be required to take four (4) semesters of composition training, either as part of a seminar or in the form of private lessons. Because (a) its only fair after making me do all of those Schenker graphs and reception studies, and (b) you guys know absolutely nothing about writing music, and its crippling your work.
