As part of my language training in learning Chinese I wrote the following tale: I am about to tell you a short story that you never heard before. It is new yet familiar. That is because each and every one of us has a similar own story to tell. I was born in the Philippines near Samar on Tubabao Island. My parents were there as refuges from Shanghai. My birth took place in a tent on ground owned by the United Nations IRO (International Refugee Organization). My parents met and married in Shanghai. My papa was born in China in the city of Harbin. My mama was born in Mongolia in the capital city of Urga. Today that city is called Ulan Bator. My wife Betty was born in United States of America, California, in the city of San Francisco. This place is known as Gold Mountain by the Chinese. She and I are about to take a journey to China to visit our ancestors. Her ancestor’s villages are near Guangzhou. My ancestors are near Harbin.
