As part of our ongoing look at lung cancer we will be publishing statistics over the next few days that are available from a few different countries around the world. Here is what they are facing in Australia. • In 2010, lung cancer was the 5th most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia (after prostate, bowel, breast and melanoma of the skin), accounting for 8.8 per cent of all new cancers in Australia, excluding non-melanoma skin cancer. • In 2011, lung cancer was the most common cause of cancer death for men and women (8,114 deaths overall: 4,959 in men; 3,155 in women), accounting for 18.8 per cent of all cancer deaths. • In 2014, about 11,550 Australians are expected to be diagnosed with lung cancer (6,720 men and 4,830 women).
