Report No. 1 Town Council October 2014 Citizen of the Year 2015 1 Purpose of the Report 1.1 To invite the Council to consider arrangements for the Citizen of the Year awards 2015. 2 Background 2.1 Each year the Town Council looks to recognize the contribution citizens and groups make to the town by their voluntary efforts. There are currently 3 awards:- a) Citizen of the Year, awarded to a person, living in the Malmesbury area who has made an outstanding contribution to the life of the town. This is decided by the Town Council b) Group of the Year, awarded to an organization or group within the town. The Paul Dove Award, awarded by Ms Lisa Huntley on behalf of the late Paul Dove c) Young Citizen of the Year, awarded to a young person between the ages of 16 and 25 who lives within the Malmesbury and who has made an outstanding contribution to the life of the town. This is usually awarded in conjunction with the Rotary Club of the South Cotswolds, as the recipient could be eligible to be put forward for their Young Citizen of the Year. This is the John Poole cup, awarded on behalf of the late Cllr John Poole 2.2 Each year, a request goes out for people to nominate individuals and groups for the different categories. 2.3 The awards are presented at a presentation event usually in April. 2.4 Last year the awards evening was combined with the Annual Town Meeting, and this was not entirely satisfactory, as the business part of the evening took up too much time, and left too little time to recognize the awards properly. 3 Proposal 3.1 To hold a separate and dedicated Awards evening in April. 3.2 To create a more formal proposal system whereby clear details are provided supporting the individual proposals. 3.3 To agree on the criteria for the awards, and how the decisions are to be made. 4 Financial Implications:- 4.1 A budget will be needed to provide refreshments for the presentation evening. 5. Recommendation 5.1 To agree holding the Citizen of the Year Award as proposed in the report.
