As plain as the nose on your face, the answer is ‘Kopi’! ‘Kopi’ is a term of endearment to us Malaysians. The various forms of ‘kopi’s enjoyed locally include kopi ‘kow’ (lethal double shot!), kopi ‘o’, kopi kurang manis, kopi nipis, kopi tarik, kopi susu, kopi ‘si’ (added evaporated milk), kopi ‘cham’ and other variations. The practice of having ‘kopi’ is entrenched in some employment, that there must be a ‘coffee break’daily at 10.00 am and 4.00 pm (otherwise the workers will ‘mogok’!). Having ‘kopi’ is ‘so recognised’ as a time-out to ‘recharge and re-energize’ that seminar have always had, as a matter of rule, a time slot for ‘coffee breaks’. Alas, there is no denial that ‘kopi’ is a uniting factor. All races and people from all walks of life, will not differ that kopi brings with it a strong sense of camaraderie*. Apart from ‘kopi’, we are all united under the same Malaysian flag. As we stand on the eve of the 56th anniversary of Merdeka Day today, let’s rejoice that we are Malaysians. No political divide should dampen our love for our country. Today, we stand as ONE NATION – MALAYSIA, tanah tumpahnya darahku! *ca•ma•ra•der•ie = Goodwill and light-hearted rapport between or among friends; comradeship.
