As promised! Today is Throwback Thursday!... THROW (some popcorn in the microwave) and sit BACK as I regale you about one of my most interesting creations. THE TELL TALE HEART BALLET, A TRULY POE-ETIC BALLET was 4.5 months in the making! (Background) I love this most famous short story from Edgar Allan Poe. I was cleaning off my bookshelf when I came across my copy of it. Immediately, I started this inner dialogue: Yes. No. Yes. No. YES!! The Yes meant I knew immediately that I was intrigued by turning this into a ballet. The no meant: How in the WORLD am I going to do it?...Well, the Ayes had it and I decided I would create this ballet! Here is the blurb I put in my program notes: The story is told from the Viewpoint of the Narrator. The gender of the Narrator is unclear, as no pronouns are used in the story. Some literary critics suggest that the Narrator could be a woman. Some even suggest that the Narrator might have been raped and that provides a motive for the murder. (Hence my idea for showing some skin on the poster photo as an indirect reference to a possible rape) So I explored these concepts in my 35 minute ballet. I danced the role of the Narrator and was onstage all 35 minutes!!! I had a notable local actress read the story aloud and I commissioned 2 Professors from Berklee College of Music to compose and conduct the music live during the performance.
