As promised yesterday. As images of the unfolding horrific & tragic events in Ottawa over the past several days run through my mind, I as a Canadian Muslimah (meaning female), of Arab decent, cant help but feel utter shock & dis-belief; not only as to what took place, but Im also equally offended by the number of bigoted, ignorant & racist comments Ive read just in the last couple of days alone, telling other Canadians to hunt us down, asking the government to crack down on or deport us, & telling me & my kind to go back to the caves from where we came. I am in no way, shape or form referring to the silent, & probably majority of decent, peace-loving & tolerant Canadians; however, how many representatives from the Muslim & Arab Communities lay wreaths @ the Memorial; how many media speeches & apologies were made by our communities; how many etc., etc., etcs., will it take, to convince some of our fellow Canadians that religious extremists do not represent us, our religion/our communities? Yet believe it or not, some of the comments were that our silence has been deafening. Do you think that most of us are un-like most of you; in also having to deal with issues with teachers, bosses, employees & with-in our own families? Do you think all we have to do with our time is only to keep on explaining & re-explaining, & to keep trying to prove our innocence? I wonder what it might be like if one day we all actually did get thrown out of this/other Western countrys; or perhaps we may all just get fed up one day & leave from our own free will. Would that make better sense to you? But wait, where would we all go; to the stolen lands of Palestine? Some, & probably most of us were born here. Which brings me to my next point; what about all the people from Western countries (not to mention the 1,000s of army personnel), who presently enjoy all the benefits of working & living in the Middle-East? Should we clamp down on them too, should we threaten to deport them, every time some nut-job of a lunatic rocks the boat? & heres my rant again in case you missed it before. If your past & present leaders didnt meddle in the affairs of the Middle-East & impose despotic dictators on our people; do you think that any of us would actually choose to live in this ice-box (yet beautiful), country of Canada, over living in our own homelands? Life (jihad), my friends is all about striving (another type of jihad), to be balanced. As our/your current leaders struggle with trying to curb civil liberties in order to better accommodate the security of the country & its people, we (as Canadian Muslims), also struggle to make concessions within our religion whenever we can, to be more accommodating to you, your values & whatnot. & Ill end it with none of us are going anywhere anytime soon; so suck it up princes/princesss; lets try to live in harmony together, & learn how to share this land & other peoples lands; the lands that were stolen from others in the first place, peace.
