Cash is still at the height of his powers as he is accompanied by a young Marty Stuart on mandolin. The song was a 1984 hit for David Allen Coe, but Cash brings nuance and perspective to it that was unique to him. The video, by filmmaker John Hillcoat, takes a broad view of the songs message, featuring plaintive images of a country going to seed. But the original lyrical intent is powerful as well, an old story of an attempt to piece a love back together with the (hoped for) magic of a surprise appearance. It doesnt work. It rarely does.
