As some of you are aware, my hat is in the ring for the vacant - TopicsExpress

As some of you are aware, my hat is in the ring for the vacant city council seat in the West end of Huntington. I have no idea of what council is going to do, and do not profess to know. I am taking a wait and see attitude. I am not counting on getting the appointment, however I do want the best person for the job. My hat flew into the ring, because if you want something done right, you need to get off your rump, and jump in and do it yourself. In the state of WV there is a longstanding political tradition that when a public official resigns in disgrace, the sucessor who is appointed to fill the unexpired term is appointed from the same political party as the predecessor. That is how it is done at the legislature, and the century old tradition works very well for both political parties. It is my understanding that municipalities are not bound to this tradition. It is entirely possible that a Republican could be appointed to replace a disgraced Democrat. I am hoping the city honors tradition, because failure to do so would make the city look bad in the eyes of the very partisan legislature, whom the city is in very many instances, very dependent on for funds. The tradition is based on the fact that a polital party, as well as an individual, won the office at the polls, and the will of the electorate should be respected out of respect for the electorate. A century old tradition based upon fair play are one of the few good things about West Virginia politics. Traditions such as this are worthy of preservation. I am confident that the great majority of council members are aware of this tradition, and will therefore respect the tradition. I will be very suprised if they do not. I have been asked numerous questions by friends about what my priorities would be in the unlikely event the appointment was made in my favor. My short term top priorities would be to collaborate with other council members to take whatever steps are necessery to supress narco-tourism from criminal residents of Detroit. I will do what I can to stop the spread of pawn shops and scrap metal dealers in the West End, that make it all too easy to hock stolen goods for quick drug money. There are some business models that are intended to facilitate the exploitation of poverty and addiction, and their mere presence exponentially accelerates urban blight. I am referring to check cashing services, payday lenders, pawn brokers, Scrap metal dealers that would be so very happy to buy your stolen copper plumbing, and the Air Conditioner from your church from the neighbothood addict. We need to abate dope in huntington through a multidisciplinary approach, and that includes potentially abating and regulating businesses that facilitate the illicit drug economy. Many of the Detroit thugs in this area are regulars at some of the less reputable bars and video poker outlets in the west end. This matter needs to be investigated and abated. As I said, I have no idea what Council will do. The older I get, the less I know. It will be interesting to see how things play out in the next week.
