As some of you know my focus lately has been to understand the plight of LGBT Homeless, especially Transgendered (The T in LGBT). Well last night I attended a talk with Jay Toole who herself was homeless for 25 years after she came out as a Butch Lesbian to her family. She has lived the shelter system through and through. Last night I found that the situation is worse than I thought. The shelter system itself is broken. I already knew that having volunteered for overnights shelter supervision. But the situation for LGBT is just completely outlandish. My suspicion that many homeless that I fed (with Coaltion for the Homeless) were LGBT was confirmed. Its safer to be on the street than in a shelter. My next step is to ask my new City Council person, Carlos Menchaca, what he is planning to do about this. Carlos is the first openly gay City Council person. I met him last week for the Transgender Rememberance march and I happen to live in his district. I just hope he has a good ear for this issue. Our New Mayor Bill De Blasio should be a good ally on this issue as well. I pray that something can be done.
