As some western press outlets, the Economist amongst them, report that Russia has won in Ukraine, the picture on the ground seems much less clear. Russia seems to have taken extremely heavy casualties during its two week intervention, its forces were unable to break into the besieged Ukrainian pocket around Inovajsk, efforts to advance towards Mariupol - albeit a likely Tauschungsmanover, to use an apt German term-stalled, and at least 2 attempts to seize the Donetsk airport using Russian special forces have failed miserably. All Russia has gotten is an expanded salient which it does not hold securely, a fact evidenced by this article, which reports the killing of a number of Russian border guards who hit the Ukrainian version of an IED near the Ukrainian city of Sverdlvosk. It looks like Finland-1940, and the verdict should be the same - the Russian army is incapable of force projection when faced by a determined opponent.
