As some you may know I am in the midst of selling my house. As part of this process we are having an appraiser value the house and its surroundings. And as I look out my window watching the diversity of species that now regularly visit or live here I realize that this will in no way add to the value of my house. It wont matter that we regularly have over a dozen variety of bird species and enough frogs to causing a deafening chorus in the springtime. In fact, if we are honest having a landscape with a more naturalized approach is often considered less valuable. I realize that it could add to the appeal of the house and that perhaps putting a dollar amount on biodiversity may not be feasible. But imagine if we did value properties using biodiversity as part of that equation. Perhaps we would see less lawn, more songbirds, bees and bats and maybe we would even spend less on maintaining those lawns and saving those songbirds.
