As someone trained in ER,I have to call this piece what it - TopicsExpress

As someone trained in ER,I have to call this piece what it is,bull. This patient presented with what is called acute abdomen if media is accurate in its reporting. His reported pain scale was 8/10 and he had a temp of 103. Gross incompetence, negligence or both to send this person home on antibiotics without determining the cause of his pain and fever. Even if Ebola is not on your radar, that was a stupid decision. A simple CBC showed his symptoms to either be viral or bacterial. If viral,it made no sense to give an antibiotic. If bacterial, that pain level and temp could signal impending perforation and peritonitis. ACA has nothing to do with this example of gross incompetence. This behavior has become endemic in medicine. Doctors and hospital staff have become non thinking drones following hospitals profit driven protocols. This is reflected in medical care, using conservative numbers, now being the third leading cause of death in the U. S.;over 200,000/year in hospitals alone. Its not just ER. The problem is systemic as medicine in general is driven by profits. This situation simply pulls back the curtain on a severely and irreparably broken system.
