As teachers we can no longer sit back and say politics has nothing to do with us. Education system of every government is directly connected with the values, and economic and social policies of a government. As institutions set up for the democracy we embraced with so much hope in 2008 crumbles around us, the time has come, I believe for us to take a deep breath and ask ourselves, is this what I want for myself, my family and my children, my students, my nation? We must remember that the wealth of the Maldives is owned by foreign investors with Maldivian partners to secure the investment. Given the hard road travelled towards democracy and economic and social reform and the mumbles and bumbles of the international community (including India) thus far, I believe that integrity can be restored in the Maldives judiciary only by the people of the Maldives. I call on Majlis to show to the people who elected you that you are indeed in Majlis to work for us. I call on religious leaders, civil society, professional organisations, artists, unions, and the Law Society of the Maldives to make known where you stand. We will find soon enough I guess, if the tipping point has indeed arrived, for us to direct our energy towards building our nation. May Allah keep us safe
