As the US bombs Syria, the victims will again be Christian communities. Syrias ancient Christian community dates to the first century. The Apostle Pauls conversion occurred just outside Damascus. Syrias government is far from perfect, but for Christians, Syria has been one of the regions few areas of relative tolerance. Christian service has flourished remarkably in Syria. We regard Syria is a model Arab country when it comes to freedom of worship. Before the last Iraq War there were about 1 million Christians in Iraq. Now that number is less then half and still dropping. Many of these Christians who lost everything in fleeing their homeland went to Syria. Yes, there are serious reason to criticize Assad, but regime change by bombing will once again empower the most ruthless elements of fundamentalist Islam.
