As the child of a psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse from the days when mental illness was even less understood (if thats possible), I feel we need to change the way we as a society think. Bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia and many others are potentially fatal diseases. Robin Williams did not kill himself, as if he had control or a choice. His brain gave out on him, it turned on him. When a person has cancer, we dont blame them when their liver gives out. When a person has heart disease, we dont call them selfish when their heart gives out. Why do we do so when the same happens to a person with mental illness? And as long as insurance companies are allowed to continue to discriminate against those with mental illness, they will be treated like second class citizens. Do you realize that many life insurance policies do not cover suicide (or cover at a significantly reduced rate)? Have you ever noticed that your co-payment for psychiatric care is far higher than a regular doctor visit? We would be outraged if this was the case for any other disease.
