Woke up in the middle of the night and clicked on HBOHD right at the start of King Arthur (2004). Missed it completely in the theatre. What a mindblowing take on the Arthurian legend. Of course it was a joint British and Italian production so its thoughtprovoking and interesting. The premise is that Arthur and his knights of the round table are the last remaining Roman cavalry guards in Britain. Theyre anticipating being freed to go home but events overtake that. An interesting thing is that Hugh Dancy plays Galahad and Madds Mikkelsen plays Tristan. Kiera Knightly plays Guinevere. Full disclosure most people and critics hated it on Rotten Tomatoes, 32 out of 100, rotten. I liked it. But I like weird stuff. Doesnt surprise me, Americans dont know any history so they wouldnt get the references and its pretty much an Anglo-Saxon thing anyway. Theres this interplay in the close of the next to the last episode of season 2 Hannibal where Graham and Lecter are imagining themselves as the reincarnation of Achilles and Patroclus. They play kind of the same dynamic in King Arthur. Heres a short description: Arthur, also known as Artorius Castus (Clive Owen), is portrayed as a Roman cavalry officer, the son of a Roman father and a Celtic mother, who commands a unit of Sarmatian auxiliary cavalry in Britain at the close of the Roman occupation in 467 A.D. (This film is set (and therefore the end of the Roman occupation of Britain is set) in 467 and not in 407, when the Roman occupation historically ended. See Roman political issues.) He and his men guard Hadrians Wall against the Woads, a group of native Britons who are rebels against Roman rule, led by the mysterious Merlin (Stephen Dillane). https://youtube/watch?v=fqZh1tg_bF4
